3 Signs Your Septic Tank Needs To Be Serviced

Septic tanks need to be pumped on a regular basis, but if you're not sure that you're going to have the money or the time to have the job done, you might put it off as long as possible. This can cause problems for your septic tank and the area around it. In order to keep these problems to a minimum, as soon as you see any of these three signs, you need to call a septic tank professional as soon as possible.

1. Water is Pooling Around the Septic Tank

One main sign that your septic tank needs to be pumped is if there are pools of water all over the area where the septic tank drains. When a septic tank is not full of sludge, the liquid will disperse evenly and you will almost never have any large pools of water, unless there is some heavy rain. If the tank is full, some of the pipes could be clogged and will force the water out of the tank more quickly than the dispersal system to handle. This will cause large amounts of water to pool in your grass. and possibly undermine the foundation of your house.

2. The Area Around Your Septic Tank Smells Terrible

This usually means that your septic tank is full enough that the top layer of sludge, which could be rotting food parts or any other solids you might have flushed down a drain, is being skimmed by the liquid that is going to your dispersal system. This will cause some of the sludge to make its way above ground or at least closer to the surface, where you will be able to smell it. In order to make sure that you are not troubled by foul odors, if you sense any peculiar smells from the septic tank area, make sure you call a septic tank service company immediately.

3. The Drainage Grass is Too Green

When a septic tank is not full, then the grass above it will look to be about as healthy as the grass in other areas of your lawn. If the tank is full, then water is going to rise to the surface and cause the grass to be exposed to some of the fertilizing compounds in the septic tank and more water than other areas of the lawn. This will cause the grass to grow more thickly. This could seem like an excellent thing, but it is indicative that you need to get your septic tank pumped before it breaks down.

If you see these signs, contact a septic tank service company, like Southern Sanitary Systems Inc, as soon as possible.
